I know people, especially in this small town, who do not celebrate Halloween. For me, coming from the suburbs of house next house next to house of candy goodness and fun, I could not comprehend why someone would not want to celebrate Halloween.
I heard it was for Christian reasons. I have heard that many times over. As a Christian, I don't quite get it... but I guess some would say that's the devil in me. So be it.
But I'm now venturing towards another theory. I think... possibly... these Christian moms who only do the Harvest celebration are on to something. If it involves your children
NOT dressing up in costumes, I could be persuaded to join their movement. I believe, and I could be wrong, but... I believe they just want to get out of making Halloween costumes under the auspices of being a good Christian mom. And I GET IT. Case in point...
One again, as has happened in years past, I have completed the Halloween costume, only to be told,
"I am not wearing
that."
$40 and approximately 1 hour later (which is
really good considering years past), I am stuck with a ghost costume, with black eyes and mouth, that will never get used. (The $40 was for the yards of white fabric I bought for Things One, Two and Special K to be ghosties, per their request. Well, K didn't quite request this, but you know...).
To top it off, Thing One has requested a scythe because he would now like to be the Grim Reaper. When told NO, I would absolutely NOT let my 5 year old be the Grim Reaper, TANTRUM. When I asked him if he knew what it stood for, he said through tears and wailing, "Yes. Killing."
Lovely. So either they want to be something evil. Or they won't wear agreed upon costume once completed.
I'm thinking Harvest sounds just about right.
As long as there is candy involved.
